Rain Dance, Oil and mixed media on canvas, 30x30cm
Rain Dance is an exhibition of new painting and drawings by Dublin based artist, Marie-Claire Cassidy, current artist in residence at deAppendix These works were influenced by the light and texture of seascapes off the west coast of Ireland. The sense of wilderness of the landscape and the contrasts of the delicacy of light against the solid structure of the coastline are what attracted the artist to this theme.
Marie-Claire is a practising artist who has studied in Dublin and Belfast. Her work has been exhibited in Ireland, New Zealand and the US. In June, 2012 she participated in the Inis Lacken Island residency at Rounstone, Connemara which was opportunity to explore this theme further. Although she has an honours degree in Fine Art Painting, her work comprises strong elements of texture, layering and montage having also studied Textile Design, this is most noticeable in the mixed media drawings on show. Her work is part of many private and corporate collections throughout Ireland, including Microsoft Ireland. She has received awards from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and most recently and Arts Council Create Artist in the Community Award for the Public Art project to collaborate in an Art and Healthcare setting at the National Rehabilitation Hospital’s Rehabilitation Unit, Dún Laoghaire.
deAppendix is a cultural space in the heart of Dublin’s burbs. Co-located with a GP surgery, deAppendix hosts a changing calendar of contemporary art exhibitions and artists talks. While not a therapeutic project itself, deAppendix exists symbiotically with a GP surgery.
Through its exhibitions and artist-in-residence programme deAppendix challenges how such spaces are activated and in doing so questions accepted norms for this genre of space. deAppendix is a project by Ciara McMahon, whose art practice frequently examins the potential for hybridity between the disciplines of Art and Medicine. deAppendix actively promotes both emerging and established artists.
