STOP LOOK CHECK – Rethinking Breast Cancer Awareness
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month our resident artist is presenting her project STOP LOOK CHECK. These posters have been used on Facebook and Twitter by the Irish Cancer Society over the last two years (2011 & 2012) gaining the highest number of ‘likes’ they have ever received from an online project.
Alison says of this body of work: Current advertising for Breast Cancer Awareness tends to make us consider helping and supporting sufferers of the disease, via the multitude of ‘Pink Ribbon’ products that are available everywhere, but do they make you STOP and LOOK and CHECK? Self examination is crucial to early detection, with this in mind I designed and photographed visual representations of everyday items that reference ‘slang words’ for breasts. Each image comes with a playful line of text to question, incite humour and direct engagement between the idea, the image and the viewer. STOP LOOK CHECK is a multilayered project with an aim to open conversation about Breast Cancer Awareness, suggesting to both men and women that…‘before we put our hands in our pockets, we should consider putting them on our own breasts first’.
