+ Claire McCluskey at deAppendix
Opening Tuesday 16th June 7 – 9 pm
Continues until 16th July 2015
A universally recognised icon, + is a symbol that carries many interpretations: addition, connection, accumulation, positivity, even spirituality. Not least, it carries a strong association with health and medicine, finding the work for this show appropriately placed within the setting of deAppendix.
The medical centre is a keystone within any community. Physical and personal wellbeing is a common social denominator — a primal priority, irrespective of culture or class. The work for + was created with collective wellbeing in mind, drawing upon the idea that each individual exists alongside the next, fundamentally equal and integrally connected within a greater social structure. The integrity of this overall form relies upon the connections between each individual.
+ as an exhibition integrates with the waiting room area of the Amaranta family practice, advocating the importance of taking care, both of ourselves and each other.
Claire McCluskey is a visual artist with a BA in Fine Art from Dublin Institute of Technology. She makes sculptures, drawings and large-scale temporary and, at times, intricate installations. She is interested in the situation of the individual amongst the collective and the structural forms this relationship gives rise to, finding that connection, repetition and collaboration often inform her work. She currently lives in Dublin and is a 2014-15 member of the Good Hatchery in Co Offally.
